Minnesota Minimum Car Insurance Requirements

In Minnesota, car insurance is mandatory for all drivers. Minnesota has provisions for liability coverage, personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

Liability insurance covers only the other car and/or that car’s driver and passengers when you are found at fault for the accident. Your liability insurance minimums for Minnesota are:

  • $30,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $60,000 bodily injury to two or more people
  • $10,000 property damage liability per accident

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) provides basic economic loss benefits. If you are involved in an accident, you and the members of your household will have certain costs covered regardless of who is at fault. This is often called “No Fault” coverage. In Minnesota your minimum PIP must include:

  • $40,000 per person per accident ($20,000 for medical expenses and $20,000 for non-medical expenses
  • Underinsured coverage pays within stated limits for medical claims that are the fault of the other driver when they do not have enough liability coverage to reimburse your medical claims.
  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury to two or more people

Uninsured coverage pays medical expenses after you’ve exhausted your PIP benefits. This insurance kicks in when the other driver is responsible but does not have insurance.

  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury to two or more people

While minimum car insurance requirements in Minnesota (Opens in a new tab) are predefined, they are not meant to be a cap on how much coverage you can or should get. You may personally opt for more coverage to protect your financial assets and your vehicle and/or passengers.
